VW Caddy

Light commercial vehicles, built on the basis of passenger models, entered the life of European cities for a long time. The recipe for their construction was quite simple: we take a passenger car, change everything that is behind the B-pillar to a cargo platform, strengthen the rear suspension and get a light utility UTE pickup truck. Then we cover the cargo platform with a cap and have a compact delivery van.

Caddy was also present in the lineup of the Volkswagen brand. But soon the designers of many brands realized that they could go a little further: if you initially equip a platform unified with a passenger car with a larger body and with a higher roof, you can get a model much more versatile. We close the window openings with rigid panels - a van comes out. We put glazing and the second row of seats - we get a cargo-passenger car, which functionally can completely replace a compact minivan.

In 2003, the third generation of Caddy appeared with the factory designation Typ 2K. The designers were able to take full advantage of the layout with a single cargo-passenger volume: the high roof made it possible to arrange the seats more vertically and give 750 liters of internal volume to the luggage compartment. At the same time, if you fold all the passenger seats, the total cargo volume of the standard version was 3200 liters, and the extended Maxi version - 4200 liters! A sliding side door provided convenience for both boarding and disembarking passengers in cramped conditions and loading luggage. The premiere of the novelty took place at the RAI motor show in Amsterdam.

From a technical point of view, the car was 50% unified with the VW Golf MK5 and the Touran compact van.

In addition to the technical, the car also received a stylistic similarity with these models, although it differed from them with a shorter hood and a different slope of the windshield. Two body lengths were provided for the car: standard and extended by 470 mm (Maxi version), first shown at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show. In 2008, the premiere of the all-wheel drive version of the Caddy 4Motion took place at the Hannover Salon, which later served as the basis for the crossover version of the Caddy Alltrack.

The model was equipped with a wide range of engines, which included naturally aspirated gasoline fours with a volume of 1.4 liters (74 and 79 hp) and 1.6 liters (101 hp), a 68-horsepower naturally aspirated diesel engine with a volume of 2.0 liters and two turbodiesels with a volume of 1.6 and 1.9 liters. The first of them could produce 74 or 101 hp, and the second - 74 or 104 hp. Together with them, both a 5-speed manual and a DSG7 robotic box could work. The main production was established in Poznań

In 2010, the car underwent a slight restyling, during which, in addition to stylistic changes, low-power gasoline engines began to be replaced by 1.2 TSI turbo engines with a capacity of 102 hp, and 1.6 TDI and 1.9 TDI by 2.0 TDI family turbodiesels with power from 110 to 170 HP

There are no mass complaints about the ergonomics of the Caddy, although there are still some flaws. For example, some owners note that the location of the cupholders is not the most convenient: “Using them is not very convenient. On the one hand, they are located deep enough, and it is inconvenient to put, for example, a glass of coffee in them, and on the other hand, if you put a 0.5 bottle of water there, then it starts to interfere.

The instrument panel in the reviews is called "simple, but informative." True, some inconvenience is caused by the absence of a coolant temperature gauge. In particular, this annoys owners of diesel versions, which, as you know, heat up for a long time: “It is especially annoying in winter. The stove begins to fully work only 15-20 minutes after starting the engine, and all this time you are shaking from the cold and thinking, what if something happened
