Volkswagen Passat B6

Passat B6 can be called one of the most popular models in the secondary market. The sixth generation, despite some reliability problems, still remains a favorite with motorists.

It is believed that the “failure with quality” of the sixth Passat occurred due to a change in its design. It is built on the Golf V platform with a transverse engine and front MacPherson struts. Before that, all Passats were equipped with a “multi-link” in front, and the engine was installed longitudinally. But the rear suspension became multi-link (front-wheel drive versions were produced with a semi-independent beam for five generations).

In general, a lot of technically sophisticated know-how has been used on the Passat B6. This is an innovative dual-clutch box, which still has not completely got rid of its "childhood diseases", as well as gasoline and diesel engines with direct fuel injection, which are characterized by whims in operation. Let's add here the dual-mass flywheel, which was installed on powerful versions of the car. It often had to be changed ahead of time if it was extended with a clutch replacement. However, more on that later.

As always, the Passat B6 was equipped with a wide range of 1.6 (102 and 115 hp), 2.0 liter (150 and 200 hp) and 3.2-liter V6 (250 hp) petrol engines. .), as well as turbodiesels 1.9 (105 hp) and 2.0 l (140 and 170 hp). In 2008, the place of the 1.6-liter (115 hp) was taken by petrol turbo engines of 1.4 (122 hp) and 1.8 liters (160 hp). Gearboxes - mechanical 5- and 6-speed, 6-band automatic, as well as a robotic 6-speed DSG transmission with two clutches operating in an oil bath,

and 7-speed with dry clutches.

In addition to front-wheel drive versions, there are cars with a 4x4 transmission. The Passat B6 was first produced in two body modifications - a sedan and a station wagon, and in 2008 the Passat CC appeared.

Passat traditionally set the tone in its class in all respects. And B6 is no exception. Therefore, with a complete set, he is all right. The initial version of Trendline had ABS, ESP stabilization system, six airbags, air conditioning, power front windows, heated mirrors and seats. Comfortline was complemented by rear power windows and cruise control. The Sportline trim sported a three-spoke leather steering wheel and matching interior trim. The Highline version was equipped with alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control and a rain sensor.

Passat B6 is stuffed with technically complex components and mechanisms that turned out to be problematic. Let's start with motors. The most popular is the 1.8-liter turbocharged. His timing mechanism is driven by a metal chain, which stretches to 100,000 km. Do not pull with a replacement, otherwise you will have to repair or change the head of the block. At the same time, the water pump, mounted in a single unit with a thermostat, also changes.

1.6 and 2.0 liter engines with FSI direct fuel injection do not start well in cold weather. Re-flashing the engine control unit did not completely solve the problem. Mechanics recommend cleaning the fuel pump and flushing the injection nozzles. But it is better to install a heater.

Turbocharger with direct injection after 120,000 km starts to "eat"

oil. The VR6 is reliable, but expensive to maintain and voracious. Diesel engines of 2.0 liters with a Common Rail power system (since 2008) are unpretentious and durable, and 8-valve turbodiesels of 1.9 and 2.0 liters with unit injectors are much more capricious.

In both DSG boxes, the valve body wears out at 100,000 km, as well as the clutch package ...

The most reliable is the base 1.6-liter “four” (102 hp). True, for the Passat it is rather weak. And the 1.8 liter turbo engine (152 hp) is optimal for it. Atmospheric engines FSI 1.6 and 2.0 suffer from poor starting in cold weather. And their turbo versions after 100,000 km intensively eat up engine oil. Turbodiesels with a common rail system are much more reliable than engines with pump injectors

The body has a 12-year warranty against rust through, so even the oldest instances of rust are not on the body. But there will certainly be a lot of chips on the front of the body, sills and wheel arches, but under them the metal has not yet “bloomed”. Passat B6 is considered noisy. And for good reason - many cavities in the bottom area are protected by plastic instead of noise-absorbing mastic.
