Seat Alhambra

The first generation SEAT Alhambra is a Spanish minivan, the serial production of which began in 1996 in Portugal. After restyling in 2000, the model received an improved design and improved technical equipment. In 2010, the second generation of the model appeared. In 2015 and 2018, Alhambra II underwent another restyling.

The car is the result of cooperation between Volkswagen AG and Ford, so the Alhambra shares a common platform with the VW Sharan Ford Galaxy. These models differ only in design, options and a line of motors.

Despite the minivan body type, outwardly the model resembles an enlarged station wagon. The SEAT Alhambra differs from its brothers Sharan and Galaxy in its stylish sporty design: swift lines of the hood turn into a slightly curved roof, longitudinal side stamping and ideal straight lines of the bottom of the body reinforce the impression of asymmetry. The standard version of the car is a five-seater, the third row of seats is offered as an option.

The owners of the Alhambra, especially the first years of production, have questions about the bodywork. The bottom is heavily rusted. Therefore, it is recommended to carry out anti-corrosion treatment, or at least not to start the first pockets of rust.

The salon is very spacious. The second and third row seats are easily transformed and removed if necessary. A lot of compartments and storage niches inside the cabin are also a distinctive feature. The rear doors of the first generation Alhambra are hinged, which makes it look like a passenger car.

The interior as a whole is distinguished by excellent ergonomics and high-quality finishing materials. After restyling in 2000, the interior is equipped with individual seat adjustments, and the control keys and dashboard have a bright red backlight. The steering column is adjustable for reach and height. Large glass area provides good visibility. The driver's seat is high.

Engines and transmission

For the first generation of the car, 5 engine options were offered:

turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol 1.8 l. (148 HP)

4-cylinder petrol 2.0 l. (114 HP)

6-cylinder VR6 petrol 2.8 liters. (201 HP)

4-cylinder diesel TDI 1.9 l. (89 HP, 109 HP, 114 HP, 129 HP, 148 HP depending on version)

4-cylinder diesel TDI 2.0 l. (138 hp).

According to gasoline versions of the engine, the owners complain about the failure of the ignition coils (often unexpectedly) and a weak fuel pump. But the rare version with VR6 will make the driver forget about the minivan and feel like driving almost a sports car.

For transmissions. The owner was offered a choice of a 6-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed "automatic" (before restyling in 2000 - a 5-speed manual transmission and a 4-speed automatic transmission). There are modifications not only with front-wheel drive, but also with all-wheel drive.

Owners of pre-styling mechanical boxes are faced with the problem of a cable break in the clutch drive and the problem of gears jumping out (bearing wear).

The second generation Seat Alhambra (after 2010) is equipped with more powerful powertrains:

TSI petrol engines (150 and 200 hp)

diesel turbocharged TDI engines (140 and 170 hp)

Automatic transmission has become preselective.
