The best automatic transmissions for Volkswagen

ZF 6HP26

The 6HP series unit was developed jointly with BMW and went into series as early as 2001, and was produced until 2017. Naturally, the luxury models of the Bavarian concern were the first to receive it. Moreover, ZF produced this six-speed hydromechanical gearbox in several modifications for transmitting various torques - these are the 19/21/28 and 32 series. The box was also installed on Audi, Ford and Jaguar cars, as well as large rear-wheel drive Kia and Volkswagen.

All "machines" are designed for longitudinally located engines up to 6 liters of displacement and digestion of torque from 250 to 750 Nm. Modification 6HP26 is designed for torque transmission up to 600 Nm. The box is considered very reliable, although it still could not do without malfunctions. On the first units, the mechatronics unit often failed, especially in the heat, when driving in traffic jams.

There were complaints about jerks and jerking of the automatic transmission due to wear of the bushings and solenoids clogged with sludge. The box is excessively heat loaded, which caused its control unit and electric bus to suffer, and the plastic pallet warped. By the way, when replacing the transmission fluid, the expensive sump also changes.

Therefore, in the maintenance of the "machine" is quite expensive. But if you follow its technical condition, the ZF 6HP26 will easily last up to 300,000 km.

ZF 8HP 45/90

An automatic 8-speed gearbox from the German company Zahnrad Fabrik replaced the 6HP and has been produced since 2010. It is installed on all BMW models, as well as on Volkswagen and Audi, Land Rover and Jaguar, Bentley and Rolls-Royce, Alfa Romeo and Lamborghini, Chrysler and Dodge, Jeep and Aston Martin cars.

The box is designed for cars with a longitudinally located engine and rear or all-wheel drive. Depending on the modification, the German "automatic" is capable of transmitting torque from 500 to 1000 Nm - for 8HP 45 and 8HP90, respectively.

The unit is distinguished not only by lightning-fast, but smooth, gear changes, compactness and economy, but also by outstanding reliability. True, in this version of the box, the oil is prescribed to be changed every 60-70 thousand kilometers. In 2014, it was modernized and instead of the designation “45”, it received the index 8НР 50. No matter how strong the automatic transmission differs, its durability directly depends on the driving style.

Of the weak points, we note a weak block of satellites and a prematurely failing oil pump. In turn, the lack of lubrication negatively affects the mechanical elements of the box. Sharp starts with slipping provoke faster wear of the friction clutches, and their wear products clog the solenodes of the valve body and mechatronics.

With age, from high heat load, the plastic pan warps, which begins to snot. Oil can also leak from the electrical board connector. The resource of the "eight-step" is no less than that of its predecessor and will work honestly for its 350,000 km. Mechanics even determine its service life at the level of half a million km and even more.
