Volkswagen Passat B5

Volkswagen Passat is a real long-liver in the world of cars and the third most popular representative of Volkswagen. This car has been produced since 1973, has gone through six generations since then and has become one of the best family cars, as evidenced by its excellent sales figures (over 15 million in total).

The fifth generation (or B5) was born in 1996 and lasted on the assembly line for almost 10 years, until 2005, when it was replaced by the Passat B6. Production was organized at a plant in the East German city of Zwickau, in addition, the fifth trade winds were assembled in China and Ukraine.

The Passat B5 debuted in October 1996 in Europe and the following year in North America. The basis for this car was the platform B5 (PL45), which he shared with the first generation Audi A4. There were only two body options: a four-door sedan and a five-door station wagon, but there were thirteen engines for the entire production period.

The Fifth Passat marked the transition to a new (and common for Volkswagen models) design style. It was based on the prototype Concept One, developed in the California design studio of the concern, and later reborn into the New Beetle model. In the same spirit, the Bora, Golf and Polo cars of the fourth generation were “painted”. Thanks to the smooth lines of the body, the Passat B5 boasted good aerodynamic performance.

In 1997, the fifth Passat with four drive wheels appeared, in 2001 a restyling was made (after which the car became known as the B5.5), and at the same time, the most powerful B5 was presented, which was produced for only two years. It was equipped with a 4-liter W8 engine with 275 hp, which accelerated a heavy car to hundreds in 6.5 seconds. This engine came "in a set" with all-wheel drive, and such Trade Winds were most popular in North America.

B5 eventually became a real cult, many call it "the last real Volkswagen", meaning by this that it fully meets the concept of "German quality". The owners were delighted with the quality of the interior materials, handling and engine performance, while considering the fifth Passat as the standard of reliability. However, there were still some complaints, and, first of all, they concerned the chassis: the suspension did not “live” for long on bad roads and required regular revision.

Gasoline engines are reliable (there is only a problem with rough idle and water pump failure), but the 1.9-liter turbodiesel can not boast of durability in hard use. Among his sores is a rapidly failing turbine and a tension roller, due to a malfunction of which the timing belt breaks, which leads to a major overhaul or replacement of the engine. 1.8-liter gasoline units (including the turbocharged version), in turn, are known for high (up to 1.5 liters per 1000 km) oil consumption with runs of more than 250 thousand km.
