The 1.4l TSI engine (122 hp) is designed to replace the 1.6l FSI engine (115 hp). The restyled Tiguan I was produced from 2011 to 2016. It is distinguished from its older brother by a more stylish look, an improved interior, an expanded range of engines and gearboxes. At one time, it was a bestseller in the new car market, and today it is one of the most sought after in the secondary market.


Today, for a restyled Tiguan I, they ask for an average of 814 thousand rubles. Those who are going to take a car need to know what sores occur in the main components of the crossover and what needs to be done to fix the problems.


Problem 1. Engines

Gasoline engines 1.4 TSI (150 hp) of the EA111 family and 2.0 TSI (180 hp) of the EA888 family suffer from oil consumption - 1-1.5 l / 1000 km. Part of the oily liquid burns out during operation, some can leave through gaskets and seals.


To solve the problem, it is recommended to fill in high-quality oil, monitor its level and change it every 7-8 thousand km. We also recommend checking the condition of the oil separator, its membrane and crankcase ventilation valve.


If the problem is more serious and an overhaul is needed, in the case of a two-liter engine, experts recommend installing a piston group from the first generation engine family (GEN 1).

Problem 2. Timing chain

There is no clear regulation for replacing the timing drive. For a 1.4 engine, the chain resource is on average 80-100 thousand km, on a 2.0 engine it is even more, but it can stretch and require replacement much earlier. Therefore, after 50 thousand kilometers, it is better to closely monitor the condition of the chain.


On a two-liter engine there is a special hole that allows you to understand what condition the tensioner is in. Getting to it is relatively simple: remove the right front wheel, fender liner, plastic pipe and plug. And, of course, in order to extend the resource, it is recommended to change the oil as often as possible and refuel with high-quality fuel.


Problem 3. DSG

In the restyled version, the Tiguan began to install a “robot” in two versions - six- or seven-speed. In all cases, these are boxes with "wet" clutches. The six-speed DQ250 came with a 1.4 petrol engine (150 hp), the seven-speed DQ500 relied on the most powerful version 2.0 (210-211 hp).


In general, these units are considered reliable, but before buying, you still need to check the condition of the clutches and mechatronics. You can do this by connecting diagnostic equipment, or on your own during a test drive. A serviceable unit should not have any jerks and “thoughtfulness” when switching.


If everything is in order, it remains only to change the oil in the box as often as possible (20 thousand km), and also to avoid overheating and frequent sharp accelerations. Another way to avoid the problems of the "robot" is to choose the option with a classic machine, most of these options are on sale.


Problem 4. Electrical

Often, wiring is oxidized in different places at the crossover. Most likely, the main reason will be in the wires between the body and the motor, which are not wrapped with electrical tape. Vibrations and friction can cause problems over time.


Failures happen with the electronics control unit. Often this happens at the moment of transition from positive temperature to negative. At the same time, the on-board computer can show that the dipped beam lamps, turn signals, brake lights are not on.


When buying, the first thing to check is the fuses. Perhaps the block itself has already been changed under warranty (the upgraded version has been installed since 2012).

Problem 5. Cooling

Malfunctions occur mainly in the warm season and in traffic jams. Errors in the control unit are associated with the operation of a large radiator fan. With a replacement, it is better not to pull so that there is no risk of overheating the engine.


In the original, both fans are replaced as an assembly with the control unit, but there are options with a separate replacement. It is also recommended to flush the radiators once a year or at least twice.


The water pump is not reliable on all types of engines. Usually it fails at 60-120 thousand km, but sometimes it does not even reach 50 thousand km.


At the slightest symptom, such as an antifreeze leak with a replacement, you should not delay it. The consequences of overheating can be especially critical for these engines.
