Volkswagen Passat B4

In 1993, the German concern VW introduced a new generation car - the Volkswagen Passat B4. This model is the result of a carefully thought-out upgrade of the 3rd generation trade wind, it is distinguished by high consumer features and safety.

On the technical side, the fourth trade wind remained unchanged:

Independent front and partially independent rear suspension;

Power steering;

Front brakes on discs, rear - drum. Heaped versions completely on disks.

Traditionally, Volkswagen produced two body modifications of the Passat 4 model - a 4-door sedan and a 5-door Variant station wagon. In the new Passat B4 line, the interior and trunk have been significantly expanded due to the perpendicular position of the engine. This innovation further facilitates the repair. At the predecessor, the motors were installed longitudinally.

Outside, the Passat 4 has been significantly redesigned:

Replacing a solid radiator grille with a classic one to maintain the style of the VW concern.

Modification of the front and rear bumpers and equipping the headlights with additional lighting.

The trunk received a bend similar to a spoiler.

Moldings decorated to match the car.

Now more and more owners and potential buyers of a VW B4 car are complaining about the active manifestation of body corrosion. At one time, the metal was partially galvanized, but over the years it has lost its ability to resist environmental influences. Rust is especially noticeable at the corners of the front doors near the windows. Moisture accumulates under the rubber seal and quietly does its job. It is worth preparing yourself mentally that when buying a Volkswagen Passat B4 you cannot do without welding.

Initially, the car has engines similar to the Volkswagen Passat B3:

petrol 4-cylinders give out 72–174 hp. With. and 125–240 Nm of torque;

4-cylinder 190 horses

The turbocharged engine with a volume of 1.9 liters (90 hp) and units with a volume of 1.8 liters and 2.0 liters with 90 and 115 liters are considered optimal in terms of dynamics and fuel consumption. With. respectively. The resource of engines ranges from 250-400 thousand km.

If the financial component is important when choosing a Volkswagen Passat B4, then repairing a 4-cylinder engine will cost much less - the engine chain and tensioner are changed every 60 thousand km. In 6-cylinder units, a metal chain is used, which serves until overhaul. Hydraulic compensators are installed in the gas distribution mechanism.

According to factory recommendations, timing replacement is needed every 120 thousand km. But with such roads in Russia, it is better to install a new belt after 90 thousand km.

Volkswagen engines with single injection often require repair of the throttle resistor and the gasket between the intake manifold and the injection unit. Gasoline engines with a distributed fuel injection system have shown themselves to be reliable and hardy.

Volkswagen Passat B4 transmission is presented:

mechanical 5-speed gearbox;

4-speed automatic gearboxes.

The automatic gearbox has proven to be reliable: with proper care and careful use, a long service life is guaranteed. With such a box B4 are rare.

Diesel

The 1Z engine is a 1.9-liter Volkswagen Passat B4 turbodiesel with a capacity of 90–110 “horses”. An excellent dynamic engine with a torque of 202 Nm and 2 valves per cylinder in a row.

The disadvantage of a turbodiesel is that warming up while driving worsens over time. The temperature often does not exceed the mark of 75 ° C. Installing a thermostat helps.

When choosing Volkswagen, experts prefer the Passat B4 models on the atmospheric version. Volkswagen with this type of engine loses in dynamics, but wins in terms of undemanding and increased engine life. The turbo engine, subject to all operating conditions, travels 200 thousand km.
